The Palace Theatre

The Palace was opened in 1891 as the English Opera House with ‘Ivanhoe’ music by Sullivan, but within a year or two it was offering quite different fare and has been re-named The Palace Theatre of Varieties. What was the Theatre going like in those days? Here is an extract from a Column of a long-defunct magazine called “Pick-me-up” of August 12th 1893.
The fortunes of “The Palace” seem to be improving, and just now I should say it is one of the pleasantest resorts of its kind in the metropolis. There is a very good ‘variety’show, to say nothing of the extraordinary concoction calles “An-Up-to-date Sketch” the synopsis of which disputes with the beer and soda-water advertisements the leading place on the programme .

“Jesus Christ Superstar” will be added to the long list as one of the most important of the Palace attractions, as on October 3rd 1978 it became the longest running musical in British Theatre History.
