Content | The Palace Theatre The Palace was opened in 1891 as the English Opera House with ‘Ivanhoe’ music by Sullivan, but within a year or two it was offering quite different fare and has been re-named The Palace Theatre of Varieties. What was the Theatre going like in those days? Here is an extract from a Column of a long-defunct magazine called “Pick-me-up” of August 12th 1893. “Jesus Christ Superstar” will be added to the long list as one of the most important of the Palace attractions, as on October 3rd 1978 it became the longest running musical in British Theatre History.
